Why Your Adirondack wedding ceremony Time Is Ruining Your Photos (and Nobody Told You)

Short answer: if you want soft, warm light on your faces during your outdoor ceremony, start it about two to three hours before sunset. Not at noon. Not at 1:00 because that's the slot the venue had open.
In the Adirondacks that looks like this. In mid-October, sunset in Lake Placid, NY is around 6:12 pm, so a ceremony between about 3:15 and 4:15 works. In late June the sun doesn't set until after 8:00 pm, so you could start as late as 5:00pm or 6:00pm. And in December the sun's gone by around 4:00pm, so you're looking at early afternoon.
That's it. That's the post. But if you want to know why, keep reading, because nobody tells couples this until they're already looking at their photos.

Why does my Adirondack wedding ceremony time matter so much for photos?
Your ceremony is the one part of your day nobody can redo. Portraits can move. Family photos can move. But you only walk down that aisle once, and whatever the sun is doing at that exact moment is what your photos get.
And most ceremony times are picked for reasons that have nothing to do with light. The venue had a slot. Dinner needs to start at 6. Grandma gets tired. All real reasons. Light just never makes the checklist.
What happens to photos with a midday ceremony?
When the sun is high overhead, it shines straight down. That gives you:
Dark shadows under your eyes and nose, even when you're smiling
Squinting, from you, your partner and every guest in the front row
A white dress that turns into a bright blob with no detail
Dark suits that lose all their texture
Here's the part I care about most. If you're camera shy, you're already nervous. Squinting into the sun in front of everyone you know makes you feel even more watched. Soft light is easier on your face and easier on your nerves.

What is the best time of day for a wedding ceremony?
Two to three hours before sunset. That gives you time for the ceremony, the hugs afterward and family photos, and then the light gets warm and low right when it's just the two of you.
That warm, low light about an hour before sunset is what people call golden hour. It's the light in almost every wedding photo you've saved.
Here are real sunset times for Lake Placid, NY and the northern Adirondack Mountains to plan around:
Date | Sunset in Lake Placid | Ceremony start to aim for |
Late June (latest sunset) | 8:44 pm | About 5:45 to 6:45 pm |
Mid-October | About 6:12 pm | About 3:15 to 4:15 pm |
Early December (earliest sunset) | 4:16 pm | About 1:15 to 2:15 pm |
Times come from sunrise-sunset.org for 2026. Look up your exact date and location, because sunset shifts about a minute or two every day in spring and fall.

What about a lake or forest ceremony?
Lakes, mountains, and forests are why people get married up here. But they make the light trickier, not easier.
Forests: sun coming through the leaves makes bright spots and dark spots all over your faces. It looks pretty in person and blotchy in photos.
Mountains: Causes the sun to disappear about 30 to 60 minutes early. Plan accordingly.
Lakes: the water bounces sunlight right back up at you. At midday that means more squinting and more glare.
These get a lot easier later in the day, when the sun is lower and softer. I'm writing a whole post on picking your ceremony spot, because there's a lot more to it.

My venue only has a midday slot. Now what?
You're not doomed. Here's what helps:
Put the sun behind you, not in your face. Light from behind gives a soft glow around your hair and no squinting.
Pick full shade, not patchy shade. A spot where the whole area is shaded evenly looks great. Half sun, half shade does not.
Save your portraits for later. Even if the ceremony is at noon, you can slip away for 20 minutes near sunset.
Ask your photographer where the sun will be. At your exact spot, at your exact time. There are free apps that show the sun's path for any date.
Is winter really a good time for wedding photos?
Honestly, yes. In December the sun never climbs very high here. So even early afternoon light stays lower and softer than summer midday light. The tradeoff is time. The sun sets at 4:16, so everything moves earlier.
I'll get into Adirondack winter weddings more in another post. Short version: winter sounds miserable.

Frequently asked questions
What time should my wedding ceremony be for the best photos?
Two to three hours before sunset. Look up the sunset time for your date and count back.
What time is sunset for an October wedding in Lake Placid?
It changes fast. In 2026 it was about 6:37 pm on October 1, about 6:12 pm on October 15, and about 5:47 pm on October 31. By the first week of November we have day lights savings time so pal on an extreme sunset time jump.
Is a noon ceremony bad for wedding photos?
Not bad, just harder. Overhead sun causes squinting and harsh shadows. Shade or putting the sun behind you helps a lot.
What is golden hour?
The hour or so before sunset, when the sun is low and the light turns warm and soft.
Should I plan around sunset if I'm camera shy?
Yes. Soft light means less squinting and less feeling watched. It's one of the easiest ways to feel more comfortable in front of the camera.
